The day my father died, my mother hired his killer to teach us to use a sword. He was an odd man with short legs and long arms that, to a child's eyes, seemed to extend well past his knees as he paced back and forth in front of a line of children.

Most instructors would begin a pupil with a wooden stick or, perhaps, a small, dulled sword. Not my instructor. He taught us with real swords. They were heavy in my small hands and I was clumsy with the weight. My instructor said that if I ever intended to avenge my father, I would need to be strong and that wielding a too-heavy blade would bring about that day much faster.

On Tuesday, the hunters dragged the corpse of a large red insect through the town and into the yard of the forge. They were a strange group, clad in odd leather armor with solid gold rivets and armed with the glass-like blades that were sometimes seen on the belts of mercenaries from the north guarding Hatzi Merchant trains.

"Keep that thing well away from the iron stocks!" shouted the smith.

Quickly, he removed the iron studs from his lip and ears and detached the gleaming metal arm he had installed himself just below his left shoulder.

Awkwardly, as though it had been a long time since he operated with only two hands, he donned a thick cloth robe and gloves and approached the corpse. Reaching it, he grasped one of the feather-like antennae in his hands and heaved. With a crunch like a lobster under a cartwheel and the smell of a dark forge, the antenna came away in the smith's hands.

"Oh yes," said the smith with a smile. "This will do nicely."

Everyone laughed when the skinny old wizard pulled out a sword. Everyone knew that the years spent studying old tomes in dusty libraries rarely led to the kind of physique that contributed to skill with a blade. This was not a particularly impressive sword either. No magical runes or mystic auras made it seem like a magical blade. Just a simple blade with a slightly longer-than-average grip.

A few stopped laughing when the wizard shrugged their robes aside, revealing a body that looked to be made of pure sinew.

"Oh ho! What do we have here?" said the leader of the Mage Hunters. "We know you are all out of magic, witch."

Slowly, the old mage pointed their sword at the group standing behind their gruff leader, and with a roaring cacophony, a ball of flame burst into existence where they once stood. Eyes wide with shock, the leader of the group let out a strangled cry, which quickly turned into a gurgle as the mage's sword was thrust into the man's chest.

"Shouldn't have stood so close together," said the wizard as, with a practiced motion, they unscrewed the pommel of the sword, letting a smoking scroll fall from inside the grip.
